 EDITOR RATING: EXCELLENT

Dell Optiplex 780 Ultra Small Form Factor - Dell Optiplex 780 Ultra Small Form Factor
  • PROS

Compact form factor. Quiet. All-in-one-like monitor stand. Relatively simple to service. VPro. DisplayPort and eSATA port. Lockable. No Bloatware.
  • CONS

Monitor stand requires too many cables and connections. Locked down desktop has no access to eSATA. Wireless requires external antenna.
  • BOTTOM LINE

The Dell Optiplex 780 USFF is an ultra-small form factor PC for the enterprise and SMB markets. Add a 22-inch monitor, and it takes up as much desk space as a mid-sized all-in-one PC. It's perfect for the space-constrained business user.
BY JOEL SANTO DOMINGO

The Dell Optiplex 780 USFF ($1,484 direct) is an ultra-small form factor (USFF) desktop PC that can fit virtually anywhere your business requires. Since it takes up so little room on the desk, it's perfect for the space-constrained business user. If you don't have any expandability needs, this Intel Core 2 Duo-equipped system has enough power to run all your business apps, and even light multimedia tasks. It's able to do all that, while still keeping a stable disk image with other Optiplex 780s in your organization. We consider the Optiplex 780 USFF one of the best USFF desktop and monitor combinations out there, thus earning it our Editors' Choice for business desktops.
Design
At about 9.5 by 2.75 by 9.5-inches (HWD), the Optiplex 780 USFF is quite small, so it will fit on virtually any desk. Dell bundled in a 22-inch widescreen monitor, and sent us an optional all-in-one mounting kit ($338), so the Optiplex 780 and monitor can be transported or installed easily. The mounting kit's stand has a handle on it so the whole system can be carried easily with one hand, sans keyboard and mouse. The desktop slides right onto a notched tray on the back of the monitor stand, and the stand has some of the cabling built in.

In order to power up the monitor and the PC and connect both to the Internet, you only need to plug in one power cable and one Ethernet cable. This convenience makes for less clutter and more space around the work area. The stand itself does have a short Ethernet and power cable for the desktop as well as another power cable for the monitor on the front of the stand. It's not a perfect system, because the monitor is interchangeable, you'll still have to route the system's VGA or DisplayPort cable through the stand and into the monitor. It would be a better design choice if the monitor had a more hidden connector to make it seem more like an all-in-one PC.

The system also comes with a lockable cover to secure the back connectors, including an eSATA port, DisplayPort, five USB ports, Serial port, and a VGA port. You don't have to use the cover, but it does make the back of the system look neater. On the other hand, you may want the eSATA port free in order to connect external hard drives. I suppose if your IT policy deems that the port be closed, but accessible, your local tech could plug-in a cable and leave it hanging before he locks the system up. Last, but not least, the back of the system has a jack for the system's 802.11n Wi-Fi external antenna. There are two USB ports on the front of the system, next to the optical drive and the audio ports, so you can still hook up USB keys and hard drives, provided your corporate policies allow them.
Features
Our review unit came with a notebook-style DVD burner, but that can of course be omitted if your business needs locked down desktops. There's also a 160GB hard drive, which will provide plenty of space for a general business user. The system is reasonably simple to service. One screw gets you into the system (after you've unlocked any security features of course), and once inside there's ready access to the two DIMM slots, both of which are filled. The drives are under an simple to pop-out panel, so they can be replaced in case of failure. Still, as is expected from a USFF desktop, there isn't any expansion room inside. You're stuck with the included Intel GMA 4500 integrated graphics.
The system didn't come with any bloatware or any software at all aside from the Windows 7 OS and drivers for all the components. This kind of quality is what you should expect from a fresh out of the box business system. Extraneous programs may interfere with programs you need to do your business. If you're installing multiple PCs, you can work with your Dell sales associate to customize software and hardware builds to meet your company's needs. The system seen here acts as a good base system for general business use.
Performance
The system comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory. This kind of power is sufficient for all clerical duties, as well as some light multimedia work. The system completes the Windows Media Encoder test in a relatively quick 45 seconds and the PhotoShop CS4 test in 1 minute 41 seconds. These are decent numbers for a mid-priced business system. You can also configure the system with the more cost-efficient Pentium Dual Core, Celeron Dual Core, and single core Celeron CPUs. The Core 2 Quad is limited to the larger Optiplex 780 chassis types (SFF, Desktop, Minitower). This system completed the PCMark Vantage test with a score of 4,910, which is average for a dual-core system with integrated graphics. The OptiPlex 780's GMA 4500 graphics aren't for complex 3D tasks. This aspect shouldn't be a problem, since system isn't targeted to users who need high-end 3D graphics.
The Optiplex 780 is an excellent choice for the main-line business worker. It has the usual SFF, desktop and minitower configurations, plus an innovative USFF chassis and monitor stand combo. While not perfect, it's a neater and more secure solution than the ones we've seen in the past. It is less expensive, yet faster and more compact than last year's Editors' Choice, the Lenovo ThinkCentre m58p Eco Ultra Small. It has a larger display and is much more flexible than theLenovo ThinkCentre A70z that I looked at earlier this year. Therefore I can award the Dell Optiplex 780 USFF with our Editors' Choice for Business Desktops. It's not perfect, but it's one of the best business PC implementations out there.

FAQ A buyers guide to shopping with www.itzoo.co.uk

FAQ A buyers guide to shopping with www.itzoo.co.uk
Where do you get your stock from?
All of our units are off-lease corporate stock. We are part of a global I.T. Leasing company with over 25 years of IT leasing and remarketing experience.
How do you refurbish the computers and laptops?
The units were removed from the corporate companies, they came in working condition so this means there is very little “hardware” refurbishing needed. If however if there are faulty components such as RAM or Hard Drives then we will replace the faulty components. The units are then professionally cleaned and made as visually pleasing as possible, before being reloaded with new genuine software.
Do you only sell refurbished computers and laptops?
Yes, we are a refurbisher and are committed to sustainable computing. We offer computers that are at the end of their lease period (usually 3 years). By selling these refurbished items and being fully compliant with WEEE regulations we feel we offer a green pathway to computer ownership with a very low cost of ownership. We also sell a small selection of new parts and accessories.
Can I upgrade the components in my computer or laptop?
We offer certain upgrades to our computers and laptops that you can purchase from our store and we will fit those upgrades for free and test them prior to shipping.
Why should I buy a refurbished computer or laptop?
When buying refurbished computers from www.itzoo.co.uk you are buying business range computers which have a very high build quality and are designed to be a “work horse” machine with great stability at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent brand new machine.
Are the pictures shown of the actual product I will receive?
Due to the extremely large volume of equipment we sell it is not always possible to take individual photographs of every item we supply. Where possible we use photographs of individual items but occasionally we will use library photographs. However the item you receive will always match the description and specification supplied in each advert.
Why should I buy from www.itzoo.co.uk?
Www.itzoo.co.uk is one of a select few Microsoft Authorised Refurbishers in the UK. Buying a Www.itzoo.co.uk computer gives you the knowledge that your software is genuine and legal and will support any and all Microsoft updates throughout the life of the computer.
What comes in a www.itzoo.co.uk box?
All desktop computers come with a UK mains lead. If the product you bought comes with a keyboard and mouse, they will also be in the box. If you buy a full system then you will also receive the relevant display cable and extra power lead. Laptops have their power supply with them that also come with a UK power lead.
What software comes with a www.itzoo.co.uk computer or laptop?
As a minimum, all of our computers come with Windows 7 Pro or Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. The operating system is configured with a “Restore Option” so it’s not necessary to have a restore disk.
How do I activate my operating system?
On the base of the computer you will find a genuine Microsoft COA sticker with the Windows activation code / product key. We also include a step by step guide to activating the OS in the box.
Do you guarantee the laptop batteries?
All the batteries are tested before being shipped to you and will hold a charge. Due to the fact a battery is a consumable we offer no warranties on them at all.
Does the computer or laptop come with a warranty?
Most items will carry a 1 year Return to Base warranty and this warranty period will be shown in the description.
Which method of payment do you accept?
We take all major credit cards and Paypal.
How long will it take for my order to arrive after I’ve ordered it?
Normally if the order is placed before 12pm on a work day and no upgrades have been ordered, it will be with you the next working day. We usually use DPD. However for larger orders we can ship with pallets or for small items we use Royal Mail.
What do I do if I have a problem with the computer or laptop?
All our products are supplied with a warranty. In the unlikely event that you encounter a problem simply contact our support team. support@itzoo.co.uk

WINDOWS 10 FAQ MICROSOFT GUIDE WWW.ITZOO.CO.UK

Windows 10

Q&A

What are the basic facts of the Windows 10 upgrade?

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as free upgrade for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It will be available starting July 29, 2015; people can reserve their free upgrade today.
You only have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Is the upgrade really free?

Yes, it’s free. This is a full version of Windows, not a trial or introductory version. It is available for a limited time:  you have one year from the time Windows 10 is available to take advantage of this offer.

How do I get my free upgrade?

You can do one of two things1:
a) Buy a new Windows 8.1 device and upgrade it to Windows 10 for free, or
b) Reserve a free upgrade for your existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC
Not every device will run every feature of Windows 10. Be sure to check with your manufacturer before purchasing. Additional details on upgrade qualifications are below.

What happens when I reserve?

When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.+

Are there any qualification requirements?

The only requirements are that a) your device is compatible, and b) you’re running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 8.1 (Update).
Windows 10 is designed to run on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs. That means your device is likely compatible and will run Windows 10.1
See the full specifications here.

If I buy a new PC today, can it upgrade to Windows 10?

Yes, new qualified PCs can run Windows 10. Windows 10 is designed to be compatible with the Windows 8.1 laptop, tablet or desktop PCs that are for sale now. Device manufacturers make decisions about their device models and some Windows 10 features may not be available on certain devices, so be sure to check with the retailer or manufacturer for details.

How long does it take to install the upgrade?

Plan for about an hour for the installation. Newer devices may only take 20 minutes, and older devices may take more than an hour.
You’ll need to download the installation files before you begin. If you reserve, we’ll take care of downloading those files for you and let you know when you are ready to get started.

How do I reserve on my existing device?

Just open the Get Windows 10 app (description below) and click reserve.
  • Click on the small Windows icon located at the lower right side of the taskbar.
  • Click ‘Reserve your free upgrade’ when prompted.
There’s no obligation and you can cancel your reservation at any time. After you reserve, we will download Windows 10 to your device when it’s available. Then we will notify you when your device is ready to install the upgrade.

What is the Get Windows 10 app?

A shot of the desktop with a circle around the Windows icon in the bottom right corner.
Get Windows 10 is an app that’s designed to make the upgrade process easy. It checks to make sure your device is compatible, and it reserves your free upgrade; it also has information to help you learn about the features in Windows 10.
For devices running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update with Windows Update enabled, the app shows up automatically as a Windows icon in your system tray at the bottom right-hand side of your screen.

How do I get a confirmation that I’ve reserved my upgrade?

Just click reserve in the Get Windows 10 app and then enter your email address at the confirmation screen.
You can also check your reservation status here:
  • Right click on the Get Windows 10 app or Windows icon located at the right end of the taskbar.
  • Select “Check your upgrade status”

If I change my mind, can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, you can cancel your reservation at any time prior to installing Windows 10. Here’s how:
  • Right click on the Get Windows 10 app or Windows icon located in right end of the taskbar.
  • Select “Check your upgrade status”
  • Click the menu in the upper left corner, then select “View Confirmation.”
  • In the lower left, select “Cancel reservation.”

Can I get my free Windows 10 upgrade even if I didn’t reserve?

Yes. The easiest way to get the free upgrade is to reserve, but you can upgrade even if you don’t reserve.
Once Windows 10 is available, we’ll begin notifying devices that their free upgrade is available. Just open theGet Windows 10 app to schedule your upgrade. Note: Some notifications will go out as soon as Windows 10 is available; others may go out in the weeks or months following.

What if I have more than one Windows device—can I upgrade them all?

Yes, you can get a free upgrade for each of your eligible Windows devices. All you need to do is make a separate reservation for each device you want to upgrade.

Why don’t I have the Get Windows 10 app?

If you don’t see the Get Windows 10  app on your PC, it might be because:
  1. Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
  2. Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
  3. You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
  4. Your device is not running genuine Windows.
Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help?Go to our Windows Community Forum.
PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.
If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.

Why am I seeing notifications about Windows 10?

We know that some users use Windows Media Center to play DVDs, and we are providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.
You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.

When do new Windows 10 devices arrive in stores?

New PCs running Windows 10 will begin to arrive after Windows 10 is available on July 29th.

Will all my stuff be in the cloud?

Your files are saved on the hard drive of your device by default. Windows 10 includes OneDrive which provides free storage space in the cloud; this is completely optional, but gives you the benefit of being able to access your personal files from anywhere.
